Extending recent developments in arts-based methods, mobile digital ethnographic methods, participatory visual methods and autoethnography in research with children, the book focuses on British Chinese children – an often-neglected group in research studies – providing new perspectives on diversity and inclusion, innovative research methods and the Chinese diaspora. The book draws on concepts from health and physical education, sport, sociology, and psycho-social studies to shed new light on social dynamics, cultural diversities and contextual changes in British Chinese children’s health-related experiences.

In this monograph, Bonnie proposed a trans-locality framework and coined the term ‘trans-local cultural capital’ based on Bourdieu’s theory of capital and extensive empirical data with non-white teachers in the UK and Australia. This new signifier, ‘trans-local cultural capital’ reframes the meaning of ‘skilled’ teachers and mobilises the need to ascribe proper ‘worth’ to trans-local teachers which repositions non-white teachers in the existing social hierarchy and is critical for the broader diversity of the profession.

Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s reflexive sociology on relative and relational sociocultural positions, this book assesses how historical, contemporary, and ongoing changes across social spaces of family, school, and community come to shape the intergenerational educational, cultural, and social reproduction of Chinese diasporic populations. The monograph provides an in-depth analysis of the identity work, educational socialisation, and resilience building of young Chinese Australians and Chinese Canadians in the ever-changing lived world.
